The Redistricting Fight That Will Shape Black Houston for a Decade

Redistricting rarely trends, and that is exactly why it matters.

The map fights underway across Harris County will determine which neighborhoods get a council member who answers the phone and which get split across three districts where no one is accountable.

Organizers who have worked previous cycles describe the same pattern: hearings scheduled at inconvenient hours, technical language that discourages public comment, and final maps that arrive with little time for review.

The counter-strategy is unglamorous. Show up to hearings, submit written comment, and bring your own map. Community-drawn proposals have moved lines before, and the groups doing it now are more organized than they were a decade ago.
